  “For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it” (Lk. 14:28)   Have you calculated the commitment of your fiancé? – –what value system will he/she help teach children? – –what is his/her view concerning divorce? – –why does he/she love you? – –how committed is he/she to you if you are worse off? 10 1. 1.looking for the perfect person – –Eph. 4:2 2. 2.the perfect looking person – –Prov. 31:30 3. 3.good marriages are simply a matter of luck – –Psa. 25:15 Common Marriage Myths

4. 4.I will marry someone who will make me happy – –no person can make you happy 100% of the time – –marriages have difficulties. Paul needed to warn husbands not to be bitter and wives to respect their husband (Col. 3:19; Eph. 5:33) – –marriage is not a “tick on dog relationship” Common Marriage Myths

5. 5.I will change him/her – –some are attracted to another because of the challenge he/she presents Common Marriage Myths

“At times people become attracted to a person because that person presents a challenge. A wild boyfriend may be interesting and exciting when dating. But if a person does not demonstrate change prior to marriage, chances are they will not change after marriage. When you marry and have children you will 'desire' someone who can be responsible with money, who can hold down a job, who will help you with things around the house and with the children. The "excitement" caused by an immature mate WEARS OFF REALLY FAST. (Proverbs 12:4; 14:1; 19:13-14; 27:8).” www.beavertonchurchofchrist.net Notable Quote: Mark Dunagan

6. 6.“It is better to live in a bad marriage than to live alone” – –“Better to dwell in a corner of a housetop, than in a house shared with a contentious woman” (Prov. 21:9) – –“Better to dwell in the wilderness, than with a contentious and angry woman” (Prov. 21:19) Common Marriage Myths

7. 7.There is a “quick fix” for any troubled marriage – –“quick fix” society - instant remedies – –doesn’t work with marriage problems can’t microwave a marriage to make it hot! marriage problems are linked to problems in people no one can “make” their mate change when lived, God’s word helps repair (1 Pet. 3:1-2) Common Marriage Myths

2. The home built by God will major on discernment. Heb. 5:13-14; Prov. 1:7-9 There will be Bible study and discussion on dress, friends, entertainment, recreation, employment, education, and all important decisions. The Home As God Designed It

3. We must eliminate things that would destroy the home. We must hate adultery and all illicit sensuality (Matt. 5:27-30; Prov. 11:29) Who we bring into our home in is important. (Psa. 101:6-8). Would we bring in poisonous snakes? Many have done so by becoming conformed to this world. Who comes in by our TV set? Internet? Movies? Music? Do we have a pilgrim's home? (Heb. 11:13- 16) The Home As God Designed It

3. We must eliminate things that would destroy the home. We must eliminate strife, anger and bitterness. (Prov. 17:1; 21:9). It may be a so-called “tolerable sin,” but it is not so with God. This is one of the major reasons our children do not develop faith. It is a poisonous atmosphere that Satan does his best work in (Eph. 4:26-27). The first step to a godly home is being humbled in repentance (James 4:7-10). The Home As God Designed It

Joshua 24:14-15 4. There must be men who lead in the raising of their children. Joshua 24:14-15 In our culture husbands often make excuses so they can leave this to their wife. This is lazy, irresponsible and cowardly. The Home As God Designed It

Joshua 24:14-15 4. There must be men who lead in the raising of their children. Joshua 24:14-15 A young successful attorney said: “The greatest gift I ever received was a gift I got one Christmas when my dad gave me a small box. Inside was a note saying, ‘Son, this year I will give you 365 hours, an hour every day after dinner. It’s yours. We’ll talk about what you want to talk about, we’ll go where The Home As God Designed It

Joshua 24:15 4. There must be men who lead in the raising of their children. Joshua 24:15 A young successful attorney said: you want to go, play what you want to play. It will be your hour!’ My dad not only kept his promise, but every year he renewed it – and it’s the greatest gift I ever had in my life. I am the result of his time.” The Home As God Designed It

5. There must be women who find fulfillment in the home. Prov. 14:1-2 What a godly work a mother can do when she prioritizes her God-given roles! Are you the meanest mother in the world? The Home As God Designed It
