Single Digit Whole Number Multiplication FlashCards

The Whole Numbers are the natural numbers (1, 2, 3, …), and the number zero (0).

When we multiply one (1) by any number, the result (product) is the number that one was multiplied by, regardless as to whether one was multiplied by the original number before it, or after it. The rule reads: 1 x a = a or a x 1 = a So 1 x 5 = 5 and 8 x 1 = 8

When we multiply any number by zero (0), the result (product) is zero, regardless as to whether the original number was multplied by the number before it, or after it. The rule reads: 0 x a = 0 or a x 0 = 0 So 0 x 7 = 0 and 9 x 0 = 0

When we multiply two numbers, the order doesn’t matter; that is, the product (result) is the same. The rule (of Commutivity for Multiplication) states: a x b = b x a Just as 4 x 7 = 28, it is also true that 7 x 4 = 28.

You may have remembered being asked to memorize whole number multiplication facts (your “multiplication tables”) in grade school. The next slide is a table of products of whole numbers 0 through 12.

To use this table, simply take any number in the top row and follow down that column and any number in the first column and follow across that row, and their product can be found where that column and row intersect. Notice that the product : 6 x 9 = 54 can be found by using the above mentioned process with the table… see next slide…

But we could have started with the 9 th column and the 6th row, and notice that the same product (54) can be found where that column and row intersect too! This is because of commutivity; that is, 9 x 6 = 54 just as 6 x 9 = 54 See the next slide…

The next 91 slides will be randomly mixed “flash cards” for multiplying whole numbers 0 through 12, which drill & practice the facts from the multiplication table we just reviewed. The answers will be revealed (UPSIDE DOWN) two seconds after the “flash card” pops up Use the “NEXT” button (below on the right) to get more “flash cards”. If you wish to end the session, use the “END” button (below on the left)
