4 Pay close attention Fold once hotdog style Fold over hamburger style Now fold once more (hamburger) when you open the paper it should look like this.

5 Next steps Make a tent so your paper looks like this. Like a pup tent -- hamburger Now watch what I do before you make your tear!!!!! Tear half-way.

13 Isolation Go to the Isolation pages. NOTES! – Hester’s left out of Puritan society due to having a child out of wedlock. She’s shunned and ostracized.

14 Isolation Answer the following questions: – Is anyone else isolated? – How does it affect Hester? Pearl? – Does isolation empower Hester? Why or why not? Include a quote from the story that shows isolation. Include the page number.

15 Justice & Judgment The citizens of the Massachusetts Bay Colony have a finely tuned sense of justice based on religion and law. When one breaks a colony’s law, one breaks God’s law.

16 Justice & Judgment Answer the questions… – What’s the difference between justice and judgment? – Why do townspeople like to judge so much? – Does Hester judge? Include a quote that shows justice and judgment. Include the page number.

21 Revenge & Mind Games Hawthorne presents revenge as unnatural act that twists a person’s soul into something evil. Vengeance belongs to God alone.

22 Revenge & Mind Games Answer the following questions: – Why does revenge twist a person’s soul into evil? – Is revenge different from other “sins” in this respect? Are some sins worse than others for Hawthorne? For you? Include a quote that shows revenge or mind games. Include the page number.

23 Hypocrisy Hypocrisy is seen not only as a sin, but a sin that leads to great personal injury. Narrator warns us not to let our reputations become more important than our lives.

Why? – Who seems to tell the truth, and what role do these characters have in the novel? – Is Hester a hypocrite? Why or why not? Be sure to include a quote about hypocrisy. Include the page number.

25 The Supernatural Lots of crazy things happen… – Eyes that glow red – Meteors in shape of an “A” – Witches on broomsticks Doesn’t matter if real or not…but they do tell us something important about characters and secrets they keep.

26 The Supernatural Answer the following questions: – What role does Mistress Hibbons play in the story? Why is it significant she’s related to the governor? – How do characters feel about supernatural things and events? – Is Pearl superhuman? Be sure to find a quote about the supernatural. Include the page number.
