1 Purple Non-Sulfur Bacteria A very unique organism By Kyle Kopple

2 Metabolism Purple non-sulfur bacteria are unique as they are photoheterotrophs, gathering energy from sunlight but CO2 from “eating” organic compounds. They are also capable of adapting to be photoautotrophs or chemautotrophs, even using low sulfur concentrations despite the name. They are anaerobic.

3 Classification These bacteria are know as Rhodospirillaceae and are classified under proteobacteria. They can be any of the usual bacterial shapes: rod, spiral, spherical. They are also gram-negative.

4 Other info They can live with or without light Can use sulfides despite their name Can be found in most water habitats including precipitation Their ecological role is not completely known They common and diverse, yet mostly unknown
