Biological Evolution – genetics standard LS3C –D: Reproduction is essential for every species to continue to exist. Some plants and animals reproduce sexually while others reproduce asexually. Sexual reproduction leads to greater diversity of characteristics because children inherit genes from both parents. In sexual reproduction the new organism receives half of its genetic info form each parent, resulting in offspring that ere similar but not identical to either parent. In asexual reproduction just one parent is involved and genetic information passed on is nearly unchanged.

04-25-2011 Warm-Up If the trait that codes for dull bear claws is a dominant trait. If it is a dominant trait, then why would it be rare to find in a bear population? Even though a trait is dominant sometimes the environment has a strong influence on the survival of a trait.

Quick Write: Do all organisms inherit their traits the same way? NO… METHOD 1: Asexual reproduction a type of reproduction that involves only one parent and produces offspring identical to the parent. (binary fission, budding, spores) Bacteria Yeast Ferns

Do all organisms inherit their traits the same way? METHOD 2: Sexual Reproduction a type of reproduction involving fusion of gametes (sperm and eggs) to produce offspring with 50% of each parents genetic information. Sperm = pollen Egg = stamen Human sperm Human egg

Some organisms can reproduce both ways…. Many plants can reproduce both sexually and asexually. Some animals can also reproduce sexually and asexually. Eggs don’t need to be fertilized Can regrow from a fragment of the parent StrawberriesSnapdragons

Types of Reproducers Asexual Sexual Each group has a list of animals that reproduce sexually or asexually. Sort each organism into the category you think they belong.

Types of Reproducers Asexual Read through the background information posted at your lab table. As you gather information create a new table with the correct placements of each organism. Sexual ------------ ------------

Characteristics of… Asexual Reproduction Sexual Reproduction Now go back through and read the background information again. This time look for facts about each type of reproduction. What are the pros and cons of each? What sizes are typical for organisms in each?

EXIT PASS Name one benefit and one negative fact about each type of reproduction.
