Localization of function in the brain

Individually: Read the Mark scheme for: “Describe one study of localization of function in the brain” (2 min) Read the handout: Changes in London taxi drivers’ brains driven by acquiring “the Knowledge” study shows. (underline it, make notes, identify aim, procedure and findings) (20 min) Reference Woollett K and Maguire EA. Acquiring 'the Knowledge' of London's layout drives structural brain changes. Curr Biol 2011.

Read “Research in psychology” Martinez and Kesner (1991) Crane J. page 41. Take note of the neurotransmitter that plays an important role in the development of memory in the hippocampus (5 min) Read “Memory and the brain” Crane J. pages 76 and 77. Make a brief resume including graphic organizer with the main concepts. Include a drawing of the brain showing the Hippocampus and the Amygdala (30 min) Read again: Mark scheme for “Describe one study of localization of function in the brain” (1 min)

Individually to be handed in at the end of the class, write down your name at the top of the page. Answer the question: Describe one study of localization of function in the brain [10 marks] (30 min) o Use Woollett K and Maguire EA. Acquiring 'the Knowledge' of London's layout drives structural brain changes. Curr Biol 2011 as an example. o Refer to the handout about the study, to the video we saw, to the readings in John Crane’s book. o Read carefully the mark scheme, make sure you include all that is asked. o This study could be used as well, as an example of study about brain plasticity, however, as the mark scheme states: It is very important that the focus of the response is on localization of function. In this case the role of the hippocampus in formation of memories.

Exchange your answer with one of your classmates. Using a different colour, mark your classmate’s work based on the mark scheme, make comments, make corrections, write down: marked by (your name) at the bottom of the page. (20min) Hand in to be marked.
