3 Houston in Office  Houston – No war, spend little, join U.S.; his views didn’t change  Cut back on spending by reducing Army and getting rid of the Navy

4 Problems with Mexico  General Vasquez with 700 soldiers took over San Antonio – declared Mexican control  General Woll with 1400 soldiers – back to San Antonio – 67 hostages  Houston sent 300 militia with General Somervell to capture Woll

5 Mier Expedition  Texans demand that the citizens of Mier provide them with supplies  Texans captured by Mexicans  General Pedro de Ampudia  Taken towards Mexico  Escaped at Salado  Recaptured – killed or imprisoned

6 Archives War  Houston did not want to run presidency in Austin  Sets up capital in Washington-on- the-Brazos  State archives still in Austin  Citizens refused to give them up  Sends troops to take archives  Citizens retrieved archives returned to Austin

7 Annexation Houston’s 2 nd attempt John Tyler – U.S. President Southerner unconcerned about the slavery issue Senate vote failed

8 Election of 1844  In Texas - Dr. Anson Jones becomes president  In the U.S. – James K. Polk becomes president

9 Statehood  February 26, 1845 – U.S. Congress approves joint resolution accepting Texas as the 28 th state  Mexico wont accept it!  State Constitution quickly drafted  February 19, 1846 Jones announces annexation
