1 Barack Obama will be sworn in as our 44 th President of the United States. He will take an oath prescribed in the Constitution which will be administered by Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. This historical ceremonial event will mark the beginning of a four year term to preserve, protect and defend the United States of America.

2 Barack Hussein Obama was elected president on Nov. 4, 2008, becoming the first African-American to claim the highest office in the land, an improbable candidate fulfilling a once-impossible dream.

3 President-elect Barack Obama Born in Hawaii on August 4th, 1961. Dad was from Kenya. Raise by his single mother and grandparents. Family didn't have much money, but they taught him values from the Kansas heartland where they grew up. He was a simple man, joined a small law firm, taught constitutional law and was guided by his Christian faith and stayed active in his community. Political drive: is to solve the challenges of everyday American without political gain.

4 Barack and Michelle met at a law firm and married in 1992. Today, they have two girls-Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7.

6  As we celebrated the birth of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., on a national holiday dedicated to his honor, many people point to the surging presidential candidacy of Barack Obama as evidence of how far this country has come in terms of race relations since the days of the Civil Rights struggle led by Dr. King. Many see Obama’s campaign as the fulfillment of Dr. King’s dream. As they would point out, here is a man who is being judged based on the content of his character, and not on the color of his skin. Could anything be more representative of the fulfillment of Dr. King’s dream than that?

7 America’s greatest moment It signifies a time of new beginnings, transforming our nation’s hopes, its political system and its outlook toward the future and how our nation is perceived abroad to other countries.

11  Obama's Stance on Homeland Security Obama's Stance on Homeland Security  Barack Obama supports increased security measures for our airports, ports, and land borders, part of a national plan to protect American’s infrastructure and keep our communities safe.  Obama's Stance on Taxes Obama's Stance on Taxes  Barack Obama will provide a middle class tax cut for 95 percent of American workers. He will restore economic growth that will help create good jobs in America and help to empower all families to achieve the American dream.

12  Obama's Stance on Iraq Obama's Stance on Iraq  Barack Obama will work with his military commanders to responsibly end the war in Iraq. Obama will refocus our resources on al Qaeda in Afghanistan and finish the fight with the terrorists who attacked us on 9/11.  Obama's Stance on Energy Obama's Stance on Energy  Barack Obama will invest in alternative fuels and renewable energy, including a plan to increase America’s energy efficiency and create 5 million new “green” jobs.

13  Students will respond to quotes from President Obama’s inaugural address, and identify the challenges facing their families and other Americans today.  Topics to focus on while listening to speech  What are his ideas about public education?  How can we make our country safe?  How can we make America strong?  What are challenges facing families and communities?  How will he create better jobs for Americans?
