2 Unemployment rate 1921 – 1929: 3.7% 1931: 25% To Keep Jobs… – Wages or hours cut – Some wages cut 30% For food…Families made: – Smaller meals – Water replaced milk – Meat disappeared Many families went to bread lines or soup kitchens for food Before going homeless, – SELL EVERYTHING (furniture, jewelry, etc.) – Move to cheaper location (smaller home) Many end up on streets… – Hoovervilles: makeshift town of tents & shacks built on public land or vacant lot Largest in Central Park, NY

3 Cover selves in hoover blanket to keep warm – Newspapers Walk around with hoover flags to show poor – Pockets hanging out Try to keep morale up – Mayor LaGuardia of NY read comic strip cartoons over radio for kids to listen
