3
PART WHOLE A fraction is a PART of a WHOLE Whole pizzaA fraction of a pizza
4
EQUAL But fractions are not just any old part of a whole, they are EQUAL parts Unequal parts Equal parts
5
how many equal parts the whole was cut into The key to fractions is figuring out how many equal parts the whole was cut into and then comparing that with how many parts we are interested in.
6
Here the whole was cut into 4 equal parts. We get to eat 1 of them. How do we write the fraction that is the part we get to eat? 12 3 4
7
And there you have our fraction 12 3 4 _____ Then below the line we write the total number of equal pieces we have. 4 Next, write the number of pieces you get to eat up here. 1 We draw a short line like this:
8
12 3 4 3344 If I tell you that you get of the pizza, it means you get of the 4 pieces of the 4 pieces3
9
The bottom number -- the number of pieces the whole was cut into -- is called the The top number -- the number of pieces we are looking at -- is the 3344 These numbers have special names. NUMERATOR DENOMINATOR top number Again, the top number is the number we are looking at, like the number we get to eat, bottom number And the bottom number tells us how many pieces there are in all!
