3 Founded in 1980 Self-supporting, non-profit, educational organization Duke TIP identifies academically talented young people and offers them a wide array of fulfilling educational opportunities What is the Duke University Talent Identification Program?

4 A program to identify and support academically talented 7 th graders Participants: Take SAT or ACT college entrance exam Receive recognition and numerous informational resources Gain access Duke TIP’s network of educational programs and resources What is the 7 th Grade Talent Search?

5 Current 7th graders (or those who skipped 7 th grade during the current year) Students who live or attend school in our 16 state region Students who scored in the 95 th percentile or higher on a grade-level achievement test or state criterion- reference test Who can participate?

13 Financial aid Talent Search Fee Grants offset the cost of participation for students who qualify for free or reduced lunch in their school

14 Test dates & deadlines SAT: Dec 7, 2013 or Jan 25, 2014 ACT: Dec 14, 2013 or February 8, 2014 ENROLLMENT DATES EXTENDED: On-line Registration deadline: Oct 21 for Dec test dates Dec 5 for Jan and Feb dates Paper application postmark deadline: Oct 1 for Dec test dates Nov 4 for Jan and Feb dates MAKE SURE TO BRING STUDENT ID or form of identification on the day of testing.

15 Information packet Serves as verification that application has been received by Duke TIP Contains: Practice test, Identification form and Educational Resource Handbook *Contact us immediately if you do not receive this packet within 5 weeks of application submission

16 n ACT u Measures academic achievement u More closely tied to high school curriculum or direct exposure to subject matter u 4 multiple choice sections: Math, English, Reading, Science u Composite score addresses total performance  36 max score for each section n SAT u Measures critical thinking, analysis, problem-solving u 3 sections: Math, Critical Reading, Writing u Scaled scores  800 max score for each section Selecting a test
