1 LMCC Part I March 22, 2010 Christopher Kirby PGY1 – Family Medicine (Montfort)

2 Basic Information Morning component: 3½ hrs –196 multiple choice questions 7 sections x 28 questions, submitted immediately following completion 5 options/questions – only 1 correct answer May include results from diagnostic test (e.g. ECGs, X-rays, photos, etc.) No deduction for wrong answers, so GUESS!

3 Basic Information Afternoon component: 4 hrs –Clinical decision-making (CDM) Short-menu and short-answer case-based questions About 60 cases; 1-4 questions per case 15-20 non-validated “test cases” – do not count May need to ask for more info, order diagnostics, make diagnoses, or prescribe therapy Be specific with diagnoses, doses, etc. READ carefully! –Not following instructions will result in a score of ‘0’

4 Components PediatricsObs/GynePsychiatry Internal Medicine Surgery Cultural-Communication, Ethical, Legal, and Organizational medicine (C2LEO) Basic epidemiology (PPV, NPV, RR, OR)

5 Studying Tips Study the way you always study Budget your time Take breaks Focus on “Sure Things” –Pediatrics –Psychiatry –Obs/Gyn –Legislation, ethics, epidemiology Focus on things you haven’t done much of during electives.

6 Study Tips Internal medicine, surgery: common illnesses, things emphasized over med school (e.g., pathology in IBD, DKA, ddx of red, painful joint), basics every physician should know (treatment of AOM, approach to lytes, acid-base, acute abdo pain, etc.) Do lots of sample tests!! (USMLE, LMCC) Find.torrents, share with colleagues

7 Exam Tips Read carefully Guess where you can Move on Watch your time Sleep well – especially the night before Take questions as they are – not tricks Don’t overanalyze adaptive questionning

8 On the 2009 exam… Pediatric febrile illnesses Dysfunctional uterine bleeding Abdo pain / GI Psych meds S/E Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy Ethics (consent, competence) Disclaimer: I’ve successfully repressed most memory of the exam.
