Gavriel Hoter was murdered by terrorists when he volunteered to substitute for a friend on kitchen duty at Othniel Yeshiva, where he was studying. GAVRIEL WAS 17 ½ years old.

“What was outstanding was the diligence, the perseverance and the equality of effort regarding everything that had to do with serving G-d.” “He was a perfectly round sphere of positive attributes, with no angles or curves. Everything was equal.” Rabbi Neria Mantzur

HUMILITY You did everything with your special serenity, always with a smile, with such great modesty and without condescension. His Friends You were modest and humble and you tried not to talk about the good things you did. You were modest and humble and you tried not to talk about the good things you did. His Brother

PEACE BETWEEN MAN AND HIS FELLOW You knew how to accept each person as he was, and you always tried to make peace between members of the class (a task which sometimes seemed impossible). His Classmates

BY MINIMIZING FOOD “Gavriel the angel, who ate one meal a day – how is it that I never noticed it when he visited us? He would always say that he had already eaten, or that he would eat later.” “You ate small amounts at specific times, and you often fasted on Mondays and Thursdays.”

BY MINIMIZING SLEEP “You made do with very little sleep – you were the last one to go to sleep, and the first one to wake up.” “Gavriel who would get up for pre-dawn prayers and stay awake learning until 2 in the morning.”

“When Gavriel did go to sleep, it would be in the back of the classroom. He would put four chairs together and ‘go to sleep.’ He would say, ‘Wake me at 12:00 for Rabbi Ariel’s class.’ You would look at your watch – and see that it was three minutes to twelve! In this way he would ‘collect’ a few minutes of sleep here and there.”

IN CLOSE ASSOCIATION WITH HIS FRIENDS You were pleasant to your friends, so much so that everyone – everyone – loved you. You were not aligned with any group or faction. You were simply accepted by everybody because of the power of your pleasantness, that radiated on everyone.” Rabbi Yehuda Morag “It was so important to you to relate to every individual personally.“

HONORING FATHER AND MOTHER “You were a precious child to your dear parents – Chaim and Elaine. “Honor your father and your mother;” “Revere your mother and your father” – you kept both of these commandments to the full. And how beautifully you treated your grandparents: with the same respect, with the same love – for grandchildren are regarded as children.” “You were a precious child to your dear parents – Chaim and Elaine. “Honor your father and your mother;” “Revere your mother and your father” – you kept both of these commandments to the full. And how beautifully you treated your grandparents: with the same respect, with the same love – for grandchildren are regarded as children.” Grodner Rabbi Reuben

HELPING OTHERS You always looked for opportunities to help, to contribute, to influence -- whether it was in the class committee or on the student council, in defending those who were weaker, or lugging the jerry cans of water on every trip. 27 FOSTER SISTER What I remember about Gavriel is that he taught me the knots in scouts and helped me with schoolwork when I had difficulty, and comforted me when I was homesick for my mother, and made me dolls out of plasticine, and taught me to say the morning prayers because I didn’t know what to do in the synagogue every morning, and he always did skits with me on Sabbath morning, and banged on the table with the glasses when we sang songs after Kiddush. And he beat me at bowling, and gave me the long shirt he was wearing when I was cold, and told me stories before I went to sleep, and other good and wonderful things.

JOY “When he would come to our home, on weekdays and especially on the Sabbaths, the house would be filled with Torah, joy and purity “When he would come to our home, on weekdays and especially on the Sabbaths, the house would be filled with Torah, joy and purity.”

PRECISION IN KEEPING THE COMMANDMENTS On trips with the Scouts you would always insist on keeping as many commandments as possible and on giving merit to the general population. On trips during Sukkot, you would bring boards and cloth, a hammer and nails, and build a sukkah according to Jewish law in the hills, in front of hundreds of people who would stare in astonishment at this boy of only 12 keeping the commandments, in spite of the fact that you were exempt because of the place and the pressures of time. But you wouldn’t eat, not even a little bite, until that sukkah was up.

HE WAS A SINGER Now when we sing your voice will be missing

CHARACTER IMPROVEMENT The scroll of his life is spread before us now. A tractate of holiness, of overcoming the temptations of this world, of improving character.

USE OF TIME The daily schedule he set for himself, besides the regular classes of the yeshiva. Includes daily exercise, and studying in the lunch break for his degree at the Open University. An indescribable utilization of time, up to the last moment. An indescribable utilization of time, up to the last moment.

“AND THE STUDY OF TORAH SURPASSES THEM ALL ”. Our Gavriel was a “talmid “talmid hachamim” (wise, knowledgeable scholar) in the fullest sense – he occupied himself with Torah regularly, daily, with incredible diligence, with perseverance and unbelievable devotion, from morning till evening, and into the late hours of the night. and in the course of the day he would immerse himself totally in learning Torah – Babylonian and Jerusalem Talmud, Mishnah, Jewish law and character improvement. Rabbi Gavriel Goldman
