A Test of Faith: Famine in Canaan or Comfort in Egypt? September 22, 2013

Abram’s Problem There is a severe famine in the promised land.

Abram’s Response to the Problem 1) Abram relies on self to solve the problem.

Abram’s Response to the Problem 2) Abram’s self-reliance leads to lies and deception, he responds with fear not faith.

Abram’s Response to the Problem 3) Abram’s deception has self-preservation as its goal – yet it endangers others as well as the promise.

God’s Response to Abram’s Plan 1) God intervenes and interrupts Abram’s deceitful plan.

God’s Response to Abram’s Plan 2) God ensures that the Promise remains intact – God is faithful to his Promises.

Consequences of Abram’s Self-Reliance 1. Lot & Abram leave Egypt with so much ‘stuff’ that it causes strife between Abram and Lot. 2. Lot was exposed to the treasures of Egypt which later causes him to pursue Sodom. 3. Sarai leaves Egypt with the maid-servant Hagar.

What We Can Learn From Abram’s Self-Reliance 1. Do not rely on self when trial and troubles come – instead Trust in God. 2. Abram reminds us that he was not perfect – but one would come that is perfect. 3. Always choose the provision of God even in the midst of famine.
