1 Project Overview NE FTCC Trainers’ Capacity Building Training May 24-25, 2010 at Mohonk Mountain House, New Paltz, NY Training Objectives: – Increase awareness of emerging “hot topics” and training technologies in the overlapping areas of HIV prevention, testing and care – Utilize information gained to inform and enhance existing and future training programs – Enhance relationships amongst trainers and training centers – Identify opportunities for future training collaborations – Develop a plan to continue skills and content development collaborations Approximately 40 senior trainers and project managers were in attendance Training Agenda Overview: – Clinical/Scientific Presentations STD Overview HIV Guidelines Update Viral Hepatitis Update TB Topics STD/HIV Prevention: Behavioral, Biological, Social Determinants and interventions Women, Addiction, HIV Risk Screening Paradigm Shift in Family Planning – Training Methodology Presentations Transition to E-learning for the National Partner Services Curriculum Adapting In-Person Courses to a Web-Based Format: The TB Program Managers Course NY/NJ AETC ACCESS Program: Longitudinal training program to build capacity in high need minority communities Impetus for Project Northeast FTCC members reached consensus that both clinical faculty, training coordinators and specialists would benefit from the following: – Understanding of how diseases and topics overlap in terms of epidemiology, behavior, natural history of disease, and clinical approach with a focus on minority populations – Learning about training techniques and processes used at other training centers – Opportunity to network and build connections with clinical and training experts at other centers Project Collaborators: – Region II STD/HIV Prevention Training Center Part 1 – STD/HIV Prevention Training Center Part II (CHBT) – New York State STD/HIV Prevention Training Center (Part III) – NY/NJ AIDS Education & Training Center (AETC) – Florida/Caribbean AETC - Puerto Rico Representative – Region II Title X Regional Training Center (RTC) – Northeast Addiction Technology Transfer Center – NJMS Global Tuberculosis Institute Steering committee explored core competencies within each training center and identify trainers and speakers to address public health strategies for integrating the following topic areas into ongoing services: – HIV – TB – STIs – Hepatitis – Substance Abuse – Reproductive Health Northeast FTCC Region II

2 Lessons Learned – Presentation and discussion on E-Learning was insightful – Multiple content specialties in one training opportunity was productive – Non-medical training participants received good information from medical experts – Good translation of training topics across fields – Opportunity to experience first hand how various disciplines prioritize medical issues – Explored culturally competent systems approaches – Participants became more aware of co-morbidity factors among certain populations Unexpected Challenges ◦ Initially the FTCC had planned a Train the Trainer program ◦ The steering committee realized that one curriculum would not meet the needs of the diverse group of training centers ◦ There were various cross cutting issues emerging in all of the training centers that had relevance to the other partners ◦ A decision was made that each training center would present the most up-to-date clinical information in their specialty area Future Collaboration Opportunities – List of services for training participants – Marketing materials for other training resources – Core competencies and baseline data on HIV/STD/TB/Hepatitis (for trainers) – Create resource list of the NE FTCC members Next Steps – Webinar as a follow-up to the 2-day training to provide ongoing dialogue, technical support and training amongst the Northeast FTCC members – Pilot & pre-test training resource products – Co-training faculty comprised of NE FTCC members & Guest Speakers – Sharing of training calendars among TCs – Regional conferences with cross topics Northeast FTCC Region II
