2 Anchoring What is anchoring –A NLP Technique –Used to change state quickly i.e from stressed to calm Or from sad to happy –It allows you to retain the ‘new state’ when under provocation Theoretical Background –Pavlov (1927/1960) –Classical Conditioning –Conditioned response –Chaining –Watson (1921) – Baby Albert –Generalisation

3 Information you need to know Anchor – the stimulus used to induce the desired state Resource State – the desired state Establishing an anchor chaining or linking the state and resource state, by producing them both at the same time (Conditioning) Activating the anchor – using the anchor to produce the resource state after the two have been conditioned Automatic unconscious anchors – when the resource state occurs immediately. In the presence of the anchor

4 Types of Anchor Visual Anchors – Something that you can see –Symbol – something relevant to you –Picture – Holiday, family, place, family member –A person – family member, friend or mentor –Object – flower, piece of jewellery, teddy bear Auditory – something you can hear –A mantra –A piece of music –Whistling –Singing

5 Continued Kinaesthetic Anchors – Something that can be sensed, felt, touched, smelt or tasted. –A perfume –A mint/sweet –Imagining a hand on your shoulder –Making a small action –Pressing an acupressure point Combination Anchors –Sounds & scents, actions & sounds, sounds & symbols, sounds & pictures, pictures & scents, symbols & small actions

6 The usefulness of anchors Anchors can be used: –In situations when you want to change how you are feeling When you are with someone who puts you down or makes you feel nervous –In situations where you would normally need to rehearse a feeling Feeling confident when giving a presentation –In situations when you need to regain a state you have just lost Feeling in control
