2 Issues with the Church People felt like church leaders were too interested in becoming wealthy & powerful. Secular ideas spread by the Renaissance reduced the importance of religion. Merchants didn’t want to pay church taxes.

3 A Religious Reform SocialPoliticalEconomicReligious Renaissance values led people to question the church. Printing press allowed critics of the church to spread ideas. Leaders challenged the Pope and other religious figures. Merchants didn’t want to pay taxes to the church. Princes & Kings became jealous of the church’s wealth. Church leaders became worldly and corrupt. Many people distrusted the church & their sale of indulgences.

4 The Reformation People believed the Bible had more authority than the church leaders. The most famous of these people was Martin Luther

5 Martin Luther Teacher & Monk Didn’t mean to start a revolution – just wanted to be a good Christian

6 He stood up against Johann Tetzel, who was raising $$ to rebuild St. Peter’s Cathedral. Indulgence: paid pardons to release a sinner from the penalties of sins Tetzel gave people the impression that they could buy their way into heaven. Martin Luther

7 Martin Luther wrote his 95 Theses and on Oct. 31 st, 1517 he posted them to the door of the church. This sparked the REFORMATION: a movement for religious reform. Martin Luther

8 In 1520, Pope Leo X threatened to excommunicate Luther if he didn’t take back his statements. Martin Luther

10 King Henry VIII Was one of the religious leaders to speak out against Luther. He wanted a male heir.
