Calvin: Reject the authority of popes (no bishops and popes to project from the sins of churchgoers. Rejects idols (jewels, gold); live simple and devote lives to God and His will. God has a plan for us; Our job is to know God and obey the Bible. Counter Reformation Loyola: Mission is to serve the Pope and his flock. Education has become primary tool to fulfil mission. 4 4 Key Ideas from Luther’s Theses: 1.The Church means “those who believe in Christ.” 2.Though there may be hierarchies within the Church, no Christian is greater or more important than any other. All vocations are equal. 3.The Bible is the final authority for all Christians. 4.Men and women live by faith alone. No efforts or works, no matter how virtuous, are enough to save a person. Men and women are saved by the grace of God’s love.
