By Martin Coulthurst and Theresa Chapman London 2012 Olympics Land Remediation

Where is it? It is a 2.5km site in the east end of London in the Lower Lea Valley. Estimated 250,000 cubic meters of land to be ‘treated’

Why choose this area? Olympic Committee helps to invest in the regeneration of part of a city It also wants the Olympic village to be a flagship for a run down area

Past Industrial Use Tar factory Oil storage depot Chemicals plant Bone-rendering plant

Contaminants Oil Petrol Tar Arsenic Lead Asbestos

Possible Remediation Methods Solidification: change of physical properties Stabilisation: change in chemical properties Phytoremediation: various methods employing plants Chemical oxidation: oxidants destroy pollutants Barriers: reduce further spread of contaminated water and filters water

Chosen Remediation Method: Soil Washing Soil is washed and the contaminants condensed and disposed of Bio remediation is also used as contaminants are harder to remove from clay

Soil Washing - Gravel Plant separates gravel fractions with screens Gravel is washed by scrubbing and counterflow It can then be reused, possible as a construction material Chosen Remediation Method:

Soil Washing - Sand Hydroclones separate sand particles from clay Sand is dewatered and then reused Contaminated sludgy clay is all that is left. This is treated by bioremediation. Smaller particles Outlet Larger particles Dirty Sludge Chosen Remediation Method:

Bio Remediation - Clay It involves passing enzymes, bacteria etc through the soil to combine with the contaminants Oil – Nitrate/sulphate fertiliser (enzyme) Lead – Phytoextraction, introduction of photosynthesising organism to absorb the lead and then be incinerated Chosen Remediation Method:

Bio Remediation - Clay Chosen Remediation Method:

Outcome On going process……. Estimated cost £1,000,000,000
