2 NETIQUETTE The rules of etiquette that apply when communicating over computer networks, especially the Internet.

4 PROPER NETIQUETTE Do not flame – “flaming” form of verbal abuse in which you disrespect an individual Keep it appropriate Treat others the way you would like to be treated DON’T TYPE IN ALL CAPS

5 COPYRIGHT The exclusive right to produce and to control an original literary, musical, or artistic work granted by law for a specified number of years.

6 FAIR USE The conditions under which you can use material that is copyrighted by someone else without paying royalties.

7 QUESTIONS OF FAIR USE The purpose of the use – Non profit? Profit?
The copyrighted work – Factual? Creative? The amount used – Too much direct use? The effect on the protected work – Hurt marketability? Competes with for profit?

8 PLAGIARISM An act or instance of using or closely imitating the language and thoughts of another author without authorization and the representation of that author’s work as one’s own, as by not crediting the original author.

9 TIPS TO AVOID PLAGIARISM
Plan ahead and do not rush through a project Keep organized notes throughout the project Take time to find trustworthy and relevant sources Use proper citation within the project

10 BE SAFE ON THE INTERNET Do not use a single password for everything
Avoid survey giveaways Avoid sharing personal information over the internet Keep anti-virus software current Be sure to update browser, firewall, and other software to combat current threats to safety
