Spatio-temporal structures of equatorial F-region plasma irregularities & Geomagnetic Regular Daily Variations (Sq, Solar quiet) as seen in space and at ground Claudia Stolle 1,2, Jaeheung Park 1, Jorge L. Chau 3 Anticipated cooperations: Joe Huba (US), David Hysell (US), Nils Olsen (DK) 1 Helmholtz Centre Potsdam, GFZ, German Research Centre for Geosciences 2 University of Potsdam, Institute of Mathematics and Institute of Earth and Environmental Sciences 3 Leibnitz-Institute for Atmospheric Physics, Kühlungsborn and University of Rostock Workshop SPP “DynamicEarth”, 3-4 July 2014, GFZ Potsdam

What do we know about equatorial plasma irregularities? Workshop SPP “DynamicEarth”, 3-4 July 2014, GFZ Potsdam Global seasonal-LT-longitude occurrence Rather independent on magnetic activity Significant day-to-day variability Signatures in the magnetic field Disturb GNSS signals

What do we know about equatorial plasma irregularities? Workshop SPP “DynamicEarth”, 3-4 July 2014, GFZ Potsdam Aveiro et al., 2011 Global seasonal-LT-longitude occurrence Rather independent on magnetic activity Significant day-to-day variability Signatures in the magnetic field Disturb GNSS signals

What do we know about equatorial plasma irregularities? Workshop SPP “DynamicEarth”, 3-4 July 2014, GFZ Potsdam Global seasonal-LT-longitude occurrence Rather independent on magnetic activity Significant day-to-day variability Signatures in the magnetic field Disturb GNSS signals Aveiro et al., 2011

What can we gain from new observations? Workshop SPP “DynamicEarth”, 3-4 July 2014, GFZ Potsdam Spatio-temporal structure of irregularities (constellation aspect) Speed and structuring of irregularities

Workshop SPP “DynamicEarth”, 3-4 July 2014, GFZ Potsdam What can we gain from new observations? Spatio-temporal structure of irregularities (constellation aspect) Inside/outside irregularities observed crustal field model prediction electron density

Workshop SPP “DynamicEarth”, 3-4 July 2014, GFZ Potsdam What can we gain from new observations? Spatio-temporal structure of irregularities (combined with ground-based data) Xiong et al., 2014

Workshop SPP “DynamicEarth”, 3-4 July 2014, GFZ Potsdam What can we gain from new observations? Spatio-temporal structure of irregularities (combined with ground-based data) Multiparameter approach When we understand the formation of irregularities, we can predict them... If we understand how plama and neutral densities and temperature variations determine the magnetic field signature, we could correct for it in the magnetic data

Geomagnetic Regular Daily Variations (Sq, Solar quiet) as seen in space (by Swarm) and at ground Workshop SPP “DynamicEarth”, 3-4 July 2014, GFZ Potsdam Tidal winds in ionospheric E-layer (100- 150 km altitude) produce electric field E, electric currents j and corresponding magnetic field signatures B -Climatology of magnetic signature B (variability with season and solar cycle) as seen by Swarm and ground observatories -First-ever direct satellite observation of the electric field E associated with Sq -Constraining ionosphere/thermosphere electrodynamics by comparing measurements of E (satellite) and of B (satellite and ground) with thermosphere-ionosphere model simulations
