Sara Kline Period 6 2/24/10

Collagen Structure

Collagen Structure Continued The molecules of collagen are cylinders that contain three spiraled chains. Each one carries about 1,000 amino acids. They are 300 nm long and 1.5 nm wide

What is Collagen? It is a connecting tissue protein found in skin, bones, tendons, cartilage and the cornea. Three helices coiled together that form a rope-like structure (called super- helical coil) It is made of two types of chains and it is insoluble in water

Amino Acids of Collagen 25% glycine 10% alanine 12% proline 10% hydroxyproline

What does Collagen do? Collagen is required to build new cellular structures and to repair any damage caused to cellular structures. It is responsible for the strength and stretch of the skin. When collagen begins to perish, that leads to wrinkles (related to aging).

What organisms use Collagen? Collagen is found in animals only and is most abundant in mammals.

Other interesting facts Vitamin C is required to make collagen and smoking ruins the process so it is suggested that smokers take Vitamin C supplements. Most important part of the skin’s connective tissue. The most common protein in the body and comprises approximately 20-30% of all body proteins.
