1 Natural Gas Pipe Sizing

2 Size all piping using this column (mains, branches, etc.). Procedure: Find the longest run from the gas meter to the farthest appliance. Use linear feet. Add up the Btuh input of all appliances connected to this gas line. Enter the table at the longest run column and don’t get out of it again.

3 Longest run = 8 + 15 +10 +3 + 46 +2 =87 Linear Feet

4 Total Btuh input of all appliances = 100 +50 +35 + 45 +60 =290,000 Btuh

5 Longest run = 87’ Total input = 290 MBHPipe size = 1 ¼”

6 1 ¼” 290 – 150 = 140,000 Btuh

7 Pipe size = 1” 140 MBH

8 1 ¼” 140 – 35 = 105,000 Btuh input 1”

9 105 MBH Pipe size = 1”

10 1 ¼” 105 – 45 = 60,000 Btuh input 1”

11 60 MBH Pipe size = ¾”

12 1 ¼” 1” ¾” Boiler and Hot Water Heater branch line = 150,000 Btuh

13 150 MBH Pipe size = 1”

14 1 ¼” 1” ¾” 1” Hot Water Boiler branch line = 100,000 Btuh

15 100 MBH Pipe size = 1”

16 1 ¼” 1” ¾” 1” Hot Water Heater branch line = 50,000 Btuh 1”

17 50 MBH Pipe size = ¾”

18 1 ¼” 1” ¾” 1” Clothes drier branch line = 35,000 Btuh 1” ¾”

19 35 MBH Pipe size = ½”

20 1 ¼” 1” ¾” 1” Range/Oven branch line = 45,000 Btuh 1” ¾” ½”

21 45 MBH Pipe size = ¾”

22 1 ¼” 1” ¾” 1” ¾” ½” ¾” 1” Finished.Make-up your pipe and fitting list.
