1 How to bake a cake…

2 Mix correct ingredients together
Step one-- Mix correct ingredients together

3 Place in a hot oven to bake.
Step 2 Place in a hot oven to bake.

4 Step 3 Allow the proper amount of time for a chemical reaction to take place and bake the cake.

5 When you remove the cake from the oven, what are the results?
Delicious, sweet cake …and wonderful smell!

6 Putting Photosynthesis in a positive light!

7 "putting together with light"
Photosynthesis Photo=light Synthesis=putting together "putting together with light"

8 What does this have to do with cake?
You need the right ingredients Carbon Dioxide and water

9 You need energy from the sun for the chemical reaction to take place.

10 Something sweet…glucose
The end product… Something sweet…glucose And oxygen added to the air.

11 Photosynthesis All organisms need energy for life functions
Autotrophs or Heterotrophs use photosynthesis? AUTOTROPHS

12 Photosynthesis 2 Stage Process: Capturing the Sun’s Energy
Using Captured Energy to make Food

13 1. Capturing the Sun’s Energy
Happens in the leaves and other green parts that contain… CHLOROPLASTS

14   The light energy (which can be from the sun or artificial) strikes the leaf, passes into the leaf, and hits a chloroplast.

15 Did ya know… One leaf is composed of tens of thousands of cells and each cell contains 40 to 50 chloroplasts.

16 The light energy, upon entering the chloroplasts, is captured by the chlorophyll.

17 1. Capturing the Sun’s Energy
Chloroplasts are green because they contain the pigment Chlorophyll.

18 2. Using Captured Energy to make Food
2 Raw Materials (ingredients) are needed: -Water (H2O) – from roots -Carbon Dioxide (CO2) – enters through STOMATA

19 What’s Stomata?

20 Nothing…What’s Stomata with you?

21 OK…it is the opening on the underside of a leaf where CO2 enters the plant cell to be used in photosynthesis.

22 2. Using Captured Energy to make Food
This step is a chemical reaction powered by energy that was absorbed from the sun. This is like the baking part…

23 2. Using Captured Energy to make Food
2 Products result: Oxygen and Glucose (Sugar)

24 2. Using Captured Energy to make Food
Water and Carbon Dioxide go in…

25 Oxygen and Glucose (Sugar) come out
H2O + CO2 = C6H12O6 + O2 This is where the chemical reaction takes place.

26 The oxygen is released into the air.

27      Carbon dioxide enters the leaf through the stomata and passes into the chloroplast.

28 Photosynthesis Equation
The equation must be balanced, equal number of each element on each side 6CO2 + 6H2O = C6H12O6 + 6O2

29 What Does Photosynthesis Do For Us?
Like plants, humans and animals rely on glucose as an energy source, but unlike plants, we can’t make it on our own.  So, the glucose made by plants is a major source of energy for animals.

30 Energy for all Caterpillars eat leaves Birds eat caterpillars
Other Heterotrophs eat birds

31 So ALL energy for all organisms comes from: The SUN

32 How is photosynthesis like baking a cake?
So….. How is photosynthesis like baking a cake? You thought I was nuts, didn’t you?
