My Science Fair Project

The Big Question It took me awhile to find my big question, but after a little thinking, I found it! My big question is: Can you make the yellow spots caused by a dog’s urination return to its natural green color?

Hypothesis From my big question, I formed the following hypothesis: If the grass that my dog urinated on is watered down with a special liquid, then it will change the yellow spot to green again.

Five Fun Facts Lime juice is great to use on burned grass spots Yellow grass is just discolored grass from nitrogen Adding too much water can kill grass Female dog urine is more potent then male dog urine Giving your dog apple juice to drink helps the grass from turning yellow

Experiment Materials that I needed for my experiment: Measuring cups Notes Water Lime Juice Lawn Spot Away (Petsmart Product)

My Steps First, I located three yellow grass areas in my lawn that were equal in size. Second, I used water, lime juice, and Lawn Spot Away. Each variable was used separately on one of the three yellow spots. Third, I tested each spot three times a week for three weeks. I recorded the date, time, and how much liquid I used on each spot. Fourth, I observed each spot and determined which variable worked the best.

My Observations I saw that Lawn Spot Away was just a green liquid that mainly stained the yellow grass. The lime juice worked well, helping the yellow grass spots turn back to green. Water was the most effective variable and completely transformed the yellow spots back to green. Finally, I observed that the snow that fell during my testing helped the yellow grass return to a green color.

My Data October : Monday 12, 2009; 5:30 p.m. 5 squirts of Lawn Spot Away, 1 cup of lime juice and water Wednesday 14, 2009; 5:10 p.m. 5 squirts of Lawn Spot Away, 1 cup of lime juice and water Friday 16, 2009; 4:30 p.m. 5 squirts of Lawn Spot Away, 1 cup of lime juice and water Monday 19, 2009; 5:30 p.m. 5 squirts of Lawn Spot Away, 1 cup of lime juice and water Wednesday, 21, 2009; 5:00 p.m. 5 squirts of Lawn Spot Away, 1 cup of lime juice and water Friday 23, 2009; 5:15 p.m. 5 squirts of Lawn Spot Away, 1 cup of lime juice and water Monday 26, 2009; 4:50 p.m. 5 squirts of Lawn Spot Away, 2 cups of lime juice and water From snow storm unable to perform experiments on Wednesday the 28th and Friday the 30. November: Monday 1, 2009; 5:10 p.m. 5 squirts of Lawn Spot Away, 3 cups of lime juice and water

My Conclusion In conclusion, the three liquids used in this experiment helped the patches of yellow grass return to a green color proving that my hypothesis was correct. Water, lime juice, and Lawn Spot Away all had positive results, but water was the most effective in changing the yellow patches of grass back to its natural green color.
