3 " THERE ARE NO TRUE GYPSIES TODAY..." In fact, there are few Romani people around the world who follow the true Gypsy customs. Their honest music expresses everything: travelling train of Gypsy wagons, coppersmiths repairing cauldrons and pots, horse fairs, fortune-telling, fights, there is also the world of Gypsy legends and dreams. The world which will die when the last Gypsy violin player dies...

4 GYPSY MUSIC BAND "...Music playing is the eternal Gypsy profession. Gypsy musicians played not only during weddings and in taverns, but also at the courts of the Polish kings. Every great boyar had his own Gypsy music band.

5 GYPSY MUSIC Gypsy music bands play Gypsy music. The question arises what the Gypsy music is and whether we can talk about folk music specific to the Romani people, or maybe it only consists of elements taken from other cultures and then transformed? There is no certain answer and this question remains an unsolved mystery. Gypsy history and culture are full of such mysteries. Unfortunately we do not know the earlier, initial form and character of Gypsy music. It had to undergo disadvantageous changes being the way of earning money, first pandering to boyars, later – to customers of inns.

6 GYPSY INSTRUMENTS Favourite Gypsy instruments are violin, dulcimer and lute. Today, a lute, zither or bagpipes – former Gypsy instruments – are often replaced with a harp or a guitar, and dulcimer is replaced with an - accordion. The older Gypsy instruments, such as dzynga or Jew’s harp, are also disappearing

9 THE OLD INSTRUMENTS HAVE BEEN REPLACED WITH: ACCORDION HARP GUITAR

10 GYPSY MINOR SCALE This type is similar to the harmonic minor scale, with the 4th degree risen.

11 GYPSY MAJOR SCALE This type is similar to the harmonic major scale, with the 2nd degree lowered.

12 GYPSY MUSIC IN POLAND The International Festival of Gypsy Music and Culture The festival takes place every year in Ciechocinek. This is the largest Gypsy event in the whole Europe. The creator and organiser of the festival is Don Vasyl - the most popular Gypsy artist in Poland. He is a fantastic musician, singer, composer, and also a great poet.

13 GYPSY MUSIC IN POLAND KAŁE JAKHA (meaning “black eyes”) is a folk music band from Cracow. It was founded in 1991. The director of the band, which consists of 15 musicians, is Zenon Bołdyzer. “ROMA” Gypsy Music and Dance Band The band presents traditional folk music of Gypsies from Poland. It was created probably in 1948 by Nano Senior Madziarowicz.

14 GYPSY MUSIC IN POLAND DON VASYL & ROMA, created in 1987. The band initiated the International Festival of Gypsy Music and Culture in Ciechocinek.
