2. The Bill of Rights 1 st amendment: 1. Freedom of religion 2. Freedom of speech 3. Freedom of the press 4. The right to peacefully assemble 5. The right to petition the government

3. The Bill of Rights 2 nd Amendment: 1. The right to create a military for protection 2. The right to own guns

4. The Bill of Rights 3 rd Amendment: 1. No soldiers can live in your home without your permission

5. The Bill of Rights 4 th Amendment: 1. Nobody can search your house, car, or personnel property without a search warrant. 2. Officials must have probable cause – (enough evidence) – to have a search warrant

6. The Bill of Rights 5 th amendment: Deals with Criminal cases 1. Nobody will be charged with infamous crime unless enough evidence has been brought to a grand jury. 2. In time of war, like terrorism, the above right can be cancelled.

7. 5 th Amendment 3. You can not be tried for the same crime twice – double jeopardy. 4. You do not have to testify against yourself in court. (I plead the fifth) 5. Every citizen has the right to due process of law – to go through the court system. 6. Private property shall not be taken without just compensation. (eminent domain)

8. The Bill of Rights 6 th amendment: 1. The right to a fair and speedy trial. 2. The right to have a jury of your peers. 3. You must be told why you were arrested. 4. You have the right to an attorney.

9. The Bill of Rights 7 th Amendment: Deals with civil court cases 1. Allows a jury to be used if the amount exceeds twenty dollars. However, Small claims courts now cover cases up to 5,000 dollars. (no jury). If it exceeds 5,000 then a jury can be used to determine guilt.

10. The Bill of Rights 8 th Amendment: 1. The bail must fit the crime – no excessive bail. 2. The fine must fit the crime – no excessive fines. 3. No cruel or unusual punishment.

11. The Bill of Rights 9 th Amendment: 1. Rights retained to the people. Some people feared that since the Bill of Rights didn’t list all your rights then the ones listed may not be protected. This amendment protects those rights.

12. Bill of Rights 10 th Amendment: Allows the states to make their own laws that are not mentioned in the Constitution.
