3  Seventh Graders  12-13 Years Old  Will be familiar with 5-Step Writing Process

4 Students will…  RLA.O.7.1.03: classify the defining characteristics, build background knowledge and apply reading skills to understand a variety of literary passages and genres by West Virginia, national and international authors: [poetry]  RLA.O.7.1.08: examine and interpret figurative language (hyperbole, simile, metaphor) and literary techniques (e.g., flashback, stereotype, foreshadowing) in text  RLA.O.7.1.09: read, compare and interpret types of poetry (e.g., narrative poems, ballads, lyric, epic), and recognize the elements to derive meaning of poetry.

5  RLA.O.7.2.04: use the five-step writing process (pre- writing, drafting, revising, editing, publishing) to generate topics, plan approaches, and develop expository and persuasive writing tasks: [poetry]  RLA.O.7.2.05: from a prompt use the five-step writing process to develop a focused composition that contains specific, relevant details and vivid and precise words.  21C.O.5-8.1.TT9: Student uses telecommunications tools (e.g., email, web pages, blogs, discussion groups, list-servs, etc.) to learn academic content and to gather, share and publish information to various audiences.

7 Web Resources  Poets.org – For the teacher to find poem examples.  Yahoo Music Lyrics- For the students to find lyrics for activity.  The Teacher's Corner- For the teacher for “Song to a Poem” activity.  Kid Pub- For both the teacher and students to submit and then review poem.

10  Day 5: Figurative Language Figurative Language Worksheet  Simile  Metaphor  Hyperbole  Imagery  Day 6: More Figurative Language Five small groups  Each group assigned a literary device Write a short poem  6-10 lines  Use literary device at least 3 times  Present to class

11  Day 7: Different Types of Poetry Discussion of various forms of Poetry  Venn Diagram  Po-A-Tree

12  Day 8: Individual Poetry Assignments 5 Step Writing Process Two Poems  Share a theme  Different types (haiku, ode, limerick, etc.)  At least 3 examples of figurative language  15 lines or more Begin Pre-writing (Free Write and Brainstorming)

16  RLA.O.7.2.04- Complete pre-writing and beginning steps together Then students will continue steps to write poems independently  RLA.O.7.2.05- Use 5-Step writing process when writing their two poems based on prompt  21C.O.5-8.1.TT9- Type out and submit poem to KidPub
