What is ‘PUBLIC HEALTH’?
‘The science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life, and promoting health through the organised efforts of society’. (Acheson, 1988) What does this mean? (Discuss).
3
Good practice for Public Health
The Faculty of Public Health defines good practice for public health as: Being population based. That public health is a collective responsibility. Recognising the key role of the state (the government) linked to a concern for the underlying socioeconomic and wider determinants of health, as well as disease. Emphasising partnerships with all those who contribute to the health of the population. Who would be responsible: Government, family, friends, charities, individuals, communities. The state is responsible - left wing. Think about David Cameron’s Big Society. There has to be a concern for those at the most disadvantage. What are the socioeconomic factors that inpact on health and mortality and morbidity? Peer pressure, income, poverty, social class, age, gender, sexuality. So public health has to take in consideration these things. Partnerships are important.
4
Population based Read handout PH25 and answer the questions.
Public health is population based because it effects all the population! Epidemics can spread from community to community and this doesn’t just mean communicable diseases! Think about obesity This is a public health concern that is reaching epidemic proportions. How does obesity ‘spread’ across communities?
5
Collective responsibility.
This means it’s not JUST the government’s responsibility but we are COLLECTIVELY responsible for public health. David Cameron’s BIG SOCIETY Government, charities, family, individuals, clubs (eg brownies/cubs), community, public services such as the police and ambulance services ETC. WHY ARE THESE RESPONSIBLE FOR PUBLIC HEALTH AND HOW DO THEY HELP IMPROVE IT?
6
Recognising the key role of the state (the government) linked to a concern for the underlying socioeconomic and wider determinants of health, as well as disease. What does the state (government) do for public health? - Law - National strategies and policy for health - MONEY for services Why does the government consider the underlying socioeconomic factors? What impact do these factors have on public health?
7
Emphasising partnerships with all those who contribute to the health of the population.
All ‘stakeholders’ are working together for the benefit of the health of the public. ‘Bottletop’ is included in Herefordshire’s Public Health Report. Bottletop works in partnership with private industry (Bulmers), the colleges, the police, charities (eg Bulmer’s foundation), Voluntary youth groups such as Close House, SHYPP, Hereford Youth Service and the Primary Care Trust PCT.

Small group work Use handout PH03.
Answer the questions and help to create the wall display. The layout of the wall display is on the next slide. EACH group will give an example (section 3) for each key aspect of public health. This means that once all your descriptive paragraphs are written, you will identify an example for each key aspect whether you wrote the descriptive paragraph or not.
