A research based curricula, training program, along with content-matched equipment Purpose: To fight childhood obesity, increase activity levels for adolescents, and promote programs for life-long wellness

 In 1996-2000, Project M-SPAN (Middle School Physical Activity and Nutrition) worked with 24 middle schools, 200 physical educators, and over 24,000 students in a study to fight childhood obesity.  The results advocated for a program… SPARK

The curriculum includes: The SPARK manual 15 instructional units written in scope with a preparation and teaching sequence. More than 400 different research-based, field-tested activities aligned to state and national standards

 SPARKFolio: This box contains and organizes hundreds of the teaching materials. The SPARKfolio saves teachers time and money downloading, copying, labeling, and laminating.

 Music CD: All the music a person needs to teach SPARK activities on one CD. Not only every cultural, country, and current dance from the SPARK manual, but warm-up and cool-down music, long and short intervals for circuit training, and more (75 minutes in length).

SPARKfamily.org: SPARKfamily.org is a special, password-protected website where only YOU can go to view video clips of SPARK Middle School PE activities, use interactive alignment and assessment tools, and even watch innovative new ideas being done with students. Includes:  Hundreds of skill and task cards in English and Spanish  Personally Fit Wellness Extensions with Home Activity Challenges and more  A SPARKfit section containing fitness and nutrition focused lessons, circuit training videos, and goal setting tools  Interactive Skill Assessment tools include dynamic rubrics optimized for iPad and similar tablets  Leveled Portfolio Assessment tools designed to assess physical, cognitive, and social development

 SPARK content experts have created equipment sets that match each and all items needed to teach activities from the SPARK manual.  That being said, almost all of the items are already in our schools today!

 SportimeMax Soft-tip Football that allows for optimal speed and safety. ($12.99 each)  An over/under hurdle ($69.99)  A full listing of equipment can be found here: http://www.sparkpe.org/wp- content/uploads/MS_Standard_2012_EP.pdf

 Follow-up support is included for any questions or consultation needed. SPARK is committed to follow-up via their unique “SPARK Stars” institutionalization model by offering FREE lifetime support through 800 number and e-mail consultation.  Additionally, each workshop attendee enjoys the following FREE resources: A monthly webinar series, social networking opportunities, and a monthly eNewsletter that includes SPARK updates, teaching tips, grant $ for PE programs, and more.

 In all, the program would cost $299.99 for the SPARK manual, music CD, Sparkfolio, access to SPARKfamily.org, as well as free consultation.  Also offered in SPARK is safe and efficient equipment for additional, nominal fees.

In all, over 45 publications have documented the positive effects of SPARK PE -- such as:  Academic Achievement  Increased moderate to vigorous physical activity in students (to over 50% of class time)  Fitness achievement (as measured by the Fitnessgram test)  Sport skills development (throw, catch, kick)  Enjoyment of PE  Improved teacher instruction (quantity and quality)  Sustainability of activeness

So, lets get involved in SPARK today!
