3 The 1 st Pope Matthew 16: 13-19 Jesus chose Peter to lead the Church because of his strong faith – he was the 1 st person to publicly profess faith in Jesus as God. “You are the Messiah – the Son of the Living God.” John 21: 15-17 Just before he ascended, Jesus trusted Peter with the care of those who believed in him. “Feed my lambs.” John 18: 15-18, 25-27 Peter was not perfect. He even denied Jesus. It is important to remember that the Pope is not God, but a human being.

10 Located within Rome, Vatican City is the smallest state in the world. It is a roughly triangular area of 0.17 square miles, lying near the west bank of the Tiber River. The most significant areas of Vatican City are St. Peter’s Basilica and St. Peter’s Square. The Vatican – where the Pope lives

14 St. Peter’s Basilica Largest Catholic Church in the world. The dome of the Basilica was designed by Michelangelo. St. Peter is buried below the altar of the basilica. The Pieta, one of the most famous sculptures in the world, is found in St. Peter’s. (Michelangelo, 1499)

Designed by the artist Bernini (a sculptor and architect), who designed it to accomodate the largest number of people possible, wanting to see and hear the Pope. Around the perimeter of the Square (which is actually circular) are large columns topped by 140 lifesize saint statues.

22 Pope Leo the Great Pope from 440-461 From Italy A Saint Stood up to Atilla the Hun to save Rome in 452. Clearly defined the Church’s teaching on the nature of Jesus : that Jesus was human AND divine. Known for his ability to resolve conflict in tense situations.

23 Pope Gregory the Great Pope from 590-604 From Italy 1 st Monk to serve as Pope Recognized as a “Doctor of the Church” – a respected teacher of the Christian faith A Saint Known for being a “pastoral” pope – for seeing the needs of his people and responding to them.

24 Pope Paul III Real name: Alessandro Farnesse Pope from 1534-1549 From Italy Called the Council of Trent, which addressed questions about Church practices raised by the Protestant Reformation. Necessary changes followed.

25 Pope Leo XIII Real name: Gioacchino Pecci Pope from 1878-1903 From Italy Wrote “Rerum Novarum” (On the Rights of Workers), in which he and The Church stood up for workers in the time of the Industrial Revolution. His letter became the basis for Catholic Social Teaching – the Church’s teachings on how to live in a society that is just and fair to everyone – particularly the ones who are most easily forgotten or taken advantage of.

26 Pope Pius XII Pope Pius XII Real Name: Eugenio Pacelli Pope from 1938-1958 From Italy Pope during WWII. His “neutral” position in regard to the war and the actions of Hitler and the Nazis is extremely controversial. Some say that he had a responsibility to do more to defend the Jews – that as the leader of the Church, his voice may have been heard. Others defend him, saying that his “behind the scenes” efforts to save Jews were all he could do, without endangering Catholics around the world. The debate continues today.

27 Pope John XXIII Real name: Angelo Roncalli Pope from 1958-1963 From Italy One of the most beloved Popes in history. Was not expected to do much of anything as Pope. Called Vatican Council II which changed all aspects of the Church forever. Is being considered for sainthood.

28 Pope Paul VI Real name: Giovanni Montini Pope from 1963-1978 From Italy Concluded Vatican Council II after the death of Pope John XXIII. Oversaw the transition of the language of the liturgy from Latin into the language of the people. Well known for his encyclical “Humanae Vitae” which addressed the Church’s teachings on the issue of birth control.

29 Pope John Paul I Real Name: Albino Luciano Pope from 8/26/78-9/28/78 From Italy Known as the “Smiling Pope” because of his obvious joy. Served the shortest term (in modern times) as Pope – just over 1 month!

30 Pope John Paul II Real name: Karol Wojtyla Pope from 1978-2005 From Poland Most traveled Pope – over 100 countries Very intelligent – fluent in 8 languages A strong diplomat – he helped to end communism in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union Took a special interest in fostering faith in young people Was shot in 1981 – forgave the shooter in 1984 Believed strongly in the Church’s teachings and refused to bend to society’s values – this was sometimes controversial.
