1 5-6 May 2009 AWG Meeting LAX1 Technology Development Project http://skatdp.astro.cornell.edu http://skatdp.astro.cornell.edu US contributions to global effort to design the SKA –Includes US contribution to the SPDO common fund –TDP deliverables equated with PrepSKA deliverables for LNSD subsystems + verification systems Targets areas that bear strongly on cost and basic performance (A e, T sys, B, cross polarization, calibration and processing, imaging dynamic range) Organized in two working groups (AWG, CPG) Will deliver to the SKA project: –Technology options for LNSD array with broadband single-pixel feeds –Costing of reflectors+mounts vs. D and f max –Optical designs that include both SP + PAF options –SKA-optimized antenna designs –Verification antenna outfitted with feeds/receivers –Calibration and processing algorithms + processing cost assessment for LNSD arrays –Cost-modeling information for project decisions

2 AWG Meeting Goals, Context and Status TDP goals  SPDO goals Costed system design by 2012 Prototype dish/feed/LNA options realized in one or more prototype (verification) systems by 2012 Broad timeline: Design Phase| Engineering Design | ϕ 1 Construction (now) ~2012 2015± Initial deployment in ϕ 1 will be dishes + SPFs It is understood that other technologies (PAFs, AAs) may provide transformational survey capabilities but may need more time to develop and play a role in later phases 5-6 May 2009 AWG Meeting LAX2

3 Dilemma How to meet the near term timeline to 2012 (system design, prototypes) while maintaining further development of potentially important options (dishes, wideband feeds, PAFs, AAs) need a balance between downselect and parallel development can we afford it all? do we need hard decisions (at the SPDO level) to make the project affordable, achievable and scientifically viable? 5-6 May 2009 AWG Meeting LAX3

4 AWG Meeting Outcomes An agreement for now-2012 time frame on work plan deliverables and key reports design review schedule overall schedule A detailed plan for realizing a prototype SKA antenna (outfitted with feeds and receivers) A clear understanding of what the prototype is for A second antenna type may be similarly deployed Prototype(s) likely will coexist with other options still on the table for project decisions Discussion of the proposal to deploy the antenna at the EVLA site for testing A picture of work plan in 2012-2015 prior to phase 1 5-6 May 2009 AWG Meeting LAX4
