ENV 412 – Process for Advanced Management and Technologies of Aircraft End of Life WORKSHOP 8: End of Life Management of Aircraft Bruce Parry Manager, Corporate Social Responsibility Bombardier Aerospace Aéro Montréal Forum 5 – 6 th December 2011

2 Putting the ENV 412 Project Into Context

3 Corporate Social Responsibility at Bombardier today

4 Design for Environment at BA Our Design for Environment (DfE) strategy is working on the principles that when a product or service is conceived, it is designed, built, used and disposed of with the least possible cost to the environment. This project is key towards contributing to this strategy

5 The five key areas of DfE and life-cycle management at Bombardier

6 The State of Play Today? According to the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) report in 2007; Over the next 20 years, approximately 5000 commercial airliners are expected to be withdrawn from service at a rate of approximately 250 per year. More than half of these aircraft end their life abandoned in desert or warehouses because of the lack of dedicated infrastructure and recycling process.

7 ENV 412: Process for Advanced Management and Technologies of Aircraft End of Life ENV412 is funded through CRIAQ (Consortium de Recherche et d’Innovation en Aerospatiale au Québec) Starting date: October 2011 Duration: 3 years Total budget: 1.4 M$ ENV 412 – Project Details

8 The Project Partners

9 The Project Objective  The overall objective of this project is to develop general methods and test them on an experimental platform to dispose of and/or implement recycling processes and dedicated infrastructure for end-of-life aircraft and helicopters, which includes;  Developing general methods and testing them on an experimental platforms to optimize recycling opportunities  Implementing recycling processes that can become profitable with a dedicated infrastructure for end-of-life aircraft and helicopters  Provide accurate information on the end-of-life of aircraft and bring data into life-cycle assessments  Ensure that lessons learned are considered in our future Design process

10 How is Bombardier Contributing to the Project?  Bombardier will be the industrial lead  Bombardier is providing financial assistance and in-kind contributions to the project, including;  Project coordination  Engineering time, project support and environmental expertise  Technical documentation (Maintenance manuals, technical illustration, testing manuals, etc.)  Bombardier will also donate a CRJ 200 to the project to enable "real" dismantling to happen and enable a thorough recycling evaluation

11 Inauguration of new CTA facilities, November 24 th 2011  Inauguration with the participation of Hélène V. Gagnon, Vice- President Communications, Public Affairs and Corporate Social Responsibility, Bombardier Aerospace and Christian Paradis, State Industry Minister  The new CTA facilities will be used by the ENV412 project to dismantle the CRJ200 that will be donated by Bombardier Centre Technologique en Aérospatiale

12 Where are we today? The donated CRJ200 will be disassembled in Tucson, Arizona, AFRA facility (valuable parts to be resold) The remainder of the airframe will be shipped to Montreal, CTA facilities, for further dismantling in March 2012

13 What are the Benefits of This Project?  Adds another dimension of expertise to the Québec and Canadian aerospace industries  Addresses a critical industry issue going forward into the future  Contributes to the overall expertise of the involved universities and training of engineering students within the aerospace industry  A wide group of industry partners that will benefit from the knowledge gained from the project
