claim: n. A piece of land that someone reserves for ownership. The settlers took a claim that bordered on the river.

convinced: adj. Persuaded; certain. They were convinced that the bridge was strong enough to carry their weight.

discouraged: adj. Not hopeful or enthusiastic. Sam felt discouraged when he learned that he had not won a prize.

fertile: adj. Rich in material needed to grow healthy plants. Wheat and corn grew well in the prairie's fertile soil.

heifer: n. A young cow that has not yet had a calf. Sally's cow has been winning blue ribbons since it was a heifer.

homestead: n. A piece of land given to settlers for farming and building a home. The Andersens' homestead lay near Blackberry Creek.

immigrants: n. A person who moves to a new country. Many immigrants from Norway made their homes on the Great Plains.

pioneer: adj. Describing a person who is first or among the first to settle in a region. Our town was settled by three pioneer families in the 1800s.

prairie: n. A large area of flat or rolling grassland. The treeless prairie stretched for miles in all directions.

sod: n. A chunk of grass and soil held together by matted roots. Settlers built houses out of blocks of sod because wood was scarce.

Claiming the Land This theme is about people who lived long ago when settlers were establishing homes on the plains. Pioneer Girl is about a family that settled in Nebraska. What do you know about life on the frontier?

Step 1 Read the Story Summery to yourself one time. Be sure to use good hand gestures to help you as you read. Step 2 Turn to your shoulder partner and partner read the story with lots of expression. Don’t forget the gestures that you have practiced. Step 3 Take turns asking and answering at least five questions each about the text. Remember to both ask and answer questions with high enthusiasm. You are going to be working in your groups to take the Selection Test.
