How To Prepare for a Video Interview

Preparing Yourself  Dress professionally!  Coordinate colors. High Recommended: Blue, Grey, Black  Avoid red, green, orange, and busy patterns. The Room  Optimize your space to work for you!  Use a room without windows to avoid glare and unnecessary noises.  Ensure the room has adequate lighting and the setting is professional.  Don’t interview in your bedroom or kitchen. Use Conference Video Etiquette  Maintain eye contact.  Avoid nervous gestures.  Use natural language, volume, and gestures when you speak. Prepare Yourself &The Room

Check the following BEFORE your interview:  Video image— Room’s lighting and how it appears on camera.  Camera Position—does it allot for best video and audio quality?  Computer’s functionality—do you have all the necessary programs?  Availability of information—are all your documents prepared and ready to be sent? Prepare Your Equipment

Prepare for the conversation  Outline key talking points you’d like to discuss!  Don’t ramble on or fall off track.  Make a guide to keep you on point and on schedule. Create A Specific Plan

BEFORE the interview its best to:  Select a secure and reliable Internet connection.  Adjust camera angles for best lighting and positioning.  Adjust volume setting for background notifications. DURING the interview its best to:  Maintain as much consistency as possible.  Keep the attention on the matter at hand, not the conference itself. Avoid Setting Changes During the Interview

At least 2 weeks BEFORE the interview:  Practice, practice, practice!  Schedule a mock interview with Career Services.  Be prepared to say exactly what you are going to say in the REAL interview.  Ask the Career Advisor questions.  Be open to constructive feedback.  Get comfortable using your PC for video conferencing. Practice Your Talking To Get Appropriate Volume And Tonality

 Its ok to initially ask “Can You Hear Me?”  Avoid repeatedly asking this throughout the interview.  Practicing in advance can help eliminate this altogether.  Remember that no technology is perfect.  Should you experience a hiccup with quality, allow for a two second delay when speaking.  Give interviewers enough time to receive and absorb whatever it is you’re saying.  Allow time for you to hear and process what the interviewer is saying. Account For Delays In Data Transmission

Be sure to retain professionalism  Be on time! Late entrances create unexpected background noise that can really hinder the interview.  Ensure you have the right time and date for the interview.  Consider whether the interviewer is in the same time zone as you.  Know the meeting name and phone number (when applicable.) Punctuality & Timing Are Crucial
