11 The Conquistadors  Hernan Cortes was an early conquistador  Landed in Mexico in 1519  Headed inland toward Tenochtitlan  Helped by Malinche, a young Native American women guide  Helped Cortes form alliances against the Aztecs  Moctezuma: sent gifts of gold and silver, but urged Cortes not to come to Tenochtitlan  Cortes arrived and was dazzled by the grandeur of the city
