A LESSON IN ETHICS “Flowers for Algernon”

ELA 8: Exploring the Unknown Essential Question What is the connection between moral and ethical implications and technological possibilities?

Ethics: Class Discussion What are ethics? Why doesn’t everyone agree on what is ethical?

Ethics: Definition Ethics are a set of principles of right conduct. Ethics seeks to resolve questions dealing with human morality—concepts such as good and evil, right and wrong, and justice and crime. The word “ethics” comes from the Greek word Ethos, meaning character.

Welcome! Welcome to our annual Ethical Exploration Conference! As a member of our organization, you have been summoned to review the latest medical and scientific research and decide if it is truly "ETHICAL.” We will look at three current advancements.

Animal Testing Animal testing (also known as animal research or animal experimentation) is the use of nonhuman animals in experiments. Research is conducted in various locations such as:  universities  medical schools  pharmaceutical companies  farms  commercial facilities

Animal Testing Research studies include:  genetics  developmental biology  behavioral studies  drug testing  cosmetics testing

Cloning Cloning is the creation of an organism that is an exact genetic copy of another. This means that every single bit of DNA is the same between the two! Top Reasons for Medical Cloning:  Medical Purposes  Revising Endangered or Extinct Species  Reproducing a Deceased Pet  Creating a New Human Life

Gastric Bypass Surgeries A group of similar operations that first divides the stomach into a small upper pouch and a much larger lower pouch and then re-arranges the small intestine to connect to both. Surgeons have developed several different ways to reconnect the intestine. The surgery leads to a drastic reduction in the functional volume of the stomach, accompanied by an altered physiological and physical response to food.

Gastric Bypass Surgeries These surgeries are used to treat patients who have:  Type 2 diabetes  high blood pressure  sleep apnea  and are morbidly obese

Let’s Take a Deeper Look at These Topics!
