Chapter Objectives Describe the ineffectiveness of early prevention approaches. Define and list “alternative activities” as a prevention approach and the qualities of a successful alternative activity. List some of the skills emphasized in the 1980s prevention programs. Define primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention. List the competencies and coping skills emphasized in a school-based prevention program.

Chapter Objectives Identify key components of a prevention program in the 1990s. Describe the Rhodes and Jason social stress model of substance abuse. Classify the risk factors for substance abuse and intervention strategies as identified by Hawkins et al. Define resiliency and survivor’s pride as it relates to the Wolins challenge model of prevention. Identify the key elements of emotional intelligence and their application to prevention.

Chapter Objectives Describe the factors associated with healthy behaviors and those associated with risk behaviors. Classify the development assets emphasized in the Search Institute model of prevention. Identify the school-based prevention programs and community models in the new millennium. Describe the special needs for prevention programs for people of color, elders, and college students.

Early Prevention Approaches These approaches were only effective with kids who already had these values, otherwise they were generally ineffective. –Converting programs –Drug-specific approaches

Alternative Activities as Prevention Approach Alternatives are actively pursued by the individual. Alternatives are acceptable, attractive, and attainable. Alternatives have mentors and role models. Alternatives integrate self-concepts.
