3 The Impact of Technology on Music Past, Present and Future Jocasta H. Frazier

4 This Web Quest for High School ( 9-10) Technology class.

5 Introduction The school carnival and festival is approaching. Each grade levels is expected to present a display. Our class has been given the wonderful assignment to do a storyboard displaying how technology has changed music over the past thirty years. This years theme for the Carnival is “Back to the Future”. Technology has changed the way we make, and use the music media. Our class will investigate how technology has changed music and how we hear it, how it is produced, written and how it is sold.Back to the Future”.

6 Task In three groups the separate groups your task is to research how music is made, quality of sound, writing styles and how it is produced and sold. In your research you want to mainly focus on the technological aspect of it all. This would include the listening and output devices. You will produce a storyboard and two page report from each member (that includes new vocabulary words). Group A task is to research the popular music of the 70’s. Group B task is to research the popular music of the 80’s. Group C task is to research the popular music of the 90’s and our move towards the future.

7 Process Day 1 You will begin your search using the following web link http://www.loc.gov/today/cyberlc/feature_wdesc.php?rec=3825. While viewing the link take notes that may pertain to your specific era. Begin collaborating with your team members and deciding how you would like your storyboard to look (it may change and that is fine). http://www.loc.gov/today/cyberlc/feature_wdesc.php?rec=3825 Day 2 Now that you have collaborated you will use the first 20 min. of class to decide on all materials needed and who is responsible for gathering what. The remainder of the class period each individual person will use the additional links to began research aspects of their paper. Day 3 You will continue to research and finalize ideas for both your paper and your groups storyboard. While you continue to work I will meet with each group to check progress. (Remember that working collaboratively and staying focused will be assessed in the final grade) Day 4-5 The finalization of story boards should begin. Each person should have brought in all needed materials and groups should begin putting storyboards together. (Independently you should be finalizing your paper). All drafts and changes are to be submitted with your finished storyboard on day five.

9 Learning Advice Technology has been a fore runner for many aspects of our lives. It is the hope as your teacher that you would take the time to consider the profound impact that technology has had on Multi media in the past thirty years.

10 Conclusion Upon the completion of this project you will be able to: Compare/contrast multi- media of the past, present, and future. Analyze changes in technology through music. Formulate differences in opinions through cooperative learning. Assess effective writing skills.

Standard: Demonstrates the ability to transfer technology skills into a significantly new situation Standard: Communicates and disseminates technology skills and knowledge in multiple ways.

13 Task: The groups will produce a storyboard and individual research papers with a vocabulary list. Resarch paper should be typed demonstrating use of Microsoft word. Products a draft and final product for storyboard. This project should endure for five 60 minutes class session days. ( students may work on research at home)
