1 Teamwork and Leadership
PUBLIC SERVICES LEVEL 3 Unit 2 Teamwork and Leadership in the Public Services.

2 TEAM DEVELOPMENT THEORIES The aim of this activity:-
By the end of the presentation you will be able to:- Define the meaning of a team. Explain team development theories developed by Belbin, Tuckman & Honey. Compare and discuss the theories by referring to your experiences.

3 ASSESSMENT The information here contributes to what is needed to complete Assignment 4, Success 7 and Merit 5. The aim of the assignment is for you to write a formal letter to the Head of the Brecon Beacon Centre to express your appreciation of your experience. Part of the letter should refer to teamwork theories as well as explaining how your experiences correspond to these theories.

4 TEAM A team is defined as:- ‘a group of people working together to realize a specific aim’. There is a great deal of difference between a group of people and a team – i.e. a purposeful objective.

5 Theories The concept of team development theories is not new. The theories allow an effective framework to create and evaluate individual contribution to a team’s development and performance.

6 Belbin’s Theory According to Belbin’s theory there are 9 team attitudes that are of key importance to success. CLASS TASK: Share Belbin’s work on the 9 attitudes amongst the class. Each group is to be responsible for researching and writing notes on the attitudes they have received. When the groups have finished, the notes are shared to complete the jigsaw. Information is available on the web site :-

7 Honey’s Theory Peter Honey has built on Belbin’s work. He has developed Belbi’n theory and has presented his own 5 layered framework. Leader – Challenger – Worker – Thinker – Helper

8 Honey’s Theory –––– Leader Challenger Worker Thinker Helper
Ensures guidance and clear aims for the team. Ensures that every individual remains focused on the task, has a specific role and is eager to succeed. Challenger A person who questions effectiveness and pushes for improvement and better results. Worker A person who is willing to roll up his sleeves and work hard for the sake of the others. Thinker This person considers each aspect carefully. He takes a step back to analyse each aspect of the work in order to improve it. Helper This person reconciles tension between individuals in the team. The aim is to achieve satisfaction and a happy team.

9 FORMING – STORMING – NORMING - PERFORMING
Tuckman’s Theory FORMING – STORMING – NORMING - PERFORMING

10 Tuckman’s Theory

11 Tuckman’s Theory Forming
During stage 1 the team is completely dependant on the leadership of the leader. Clear and specific aims are formed. Clear guidance is needed. Storming Everyone tries to establish their role as part of the team and so there is opportunity to challenge other members and the aims that have been set. Conciliation will be needed as different people challenge for supremacy and the best method of leading. Norming Recognising challenges and agreeing are the main characteristics of this stage. It is an important factor in the development – without agreement a team will not achieve its potential. Team spirit and respect develops. Performing By this stage the team is performing at its best. Everyone is in agreement, every member is happy and understands his/her sole and what needs to be done. By now the team is working together well and supporting each other in a challenging environment.
