6 Vive La France!  By September of 1944, France is liberated from German occupation.

7 Battle of the Bulge  Last German offensive in WWII.

8 Berlin is invaded in 1945.  The Soviet army take Berlin.  Hitler commits suicide.

9 U.S. re-captures the Pacific Islands

10 Hiroshima and Nagasaki

11 Hirohito surrenders.

12 Final Count  15 million killed during the war.  40 million dead from starvation, genocide, and disease.

13 The Holocaust

14 Untermenschen  Slavs were seen as subhuman beasts.  Many Poles were killed.  Marriage was limited for the Poles to prevent children.

15 Judenrein  “Free of Jews”  6 Million Jews lived in Poland alone

17 Anti-Semitism  Prohibited Jews from having certain jobs,  Businesses were closed Sundays.  Jews enter medicine and law professions.

18 1 st Plan  Herd all of the Jews into Lublin, Poland.

19 Ghettos  Jews were forced to live in ghettos.  The largest were in Lodz and Warsaw.  Many died here of disease and malnutrition.

20 Genocide  1941- Jews were forced to leave the ghettos for concentration camps.

21 1945  90% of the Polish Jews were killed.
