Studies show importance of seeing others’ point of view Studied development of moral reasoning deciding right and wrong Presented a series of moral dilemmas 84 children of different ages Story of a man stealing medicine for his dying wife He could not afford the medicine Creates 6 stages of moral development

4 Level 1 ( Preconventional )
Stage 1 Egocentric don’t consider others’ POV no sense of right or wrong main concern = avoid punishment If they said he should steal = he would be blamed if wife died he shouldn’t steal = will go to jail Stage 2 better idea of how to receive rewards & avoid punishment no sense of right or wrong golden rule “help someone if he helps you, and hurt him if he hurts you” egocentric/ premoral evaluate in terms of consequence not right or wrong

5 Level 2 ( Conventional ) Stage 3 Sensitive to what others think
Sensitive to what others want They thought ... The man should steal > If wife dies he is cruel The man shouldn’t steal > If he steals he is a criminal Social approval Stage 4 less concerned about approval key issue = law & order law moral rule strong belief in established authority Quite rigid

6 Level 3 ( Postconventional )
