Scientific Method Day 4

Title: Criteria for a Conclusion (pages 9-10) (Put this into your table of contents!!) 10/01/07

Left (Remember your content page) Objective: SWBAT describe the criteria of and write a scientific conclusion. Catalyst: Write a conclusion for the murder mystery: Who did it? How? Why? (10 minutes) * Also if you haven’t finished your guided questions, finish them after your catalyst

Do Now…(Do not copy!) Right 10 minutes Read over conclusions 1 and 2. Which conclusion is better? Explain why it is better.

Left Objective: SWBAT write a conclusion about The Jon Baker Mystery. Catalyst: Quietly take out your homework from yesterday. We will discuss it as a class.

Notes… Left (under the catalyst) Criteria of a GOOD Conclusion 1)Answers the original (main) question 2)States whether the hypothesis is right or wrong 3)Give evidence to support the answer 4)Must be reasonable

Question: Who stole the Hope Diamond? Hypothesis: I think that the thief is Margaret Meade because she is a former diamond thief. Conclusion 1: From the data gathered, my hypothesis is wrong. The thief is actually Lucky Louie and not Margaret Meade. The security guard said that the thief was a man. This eliminated Margaret as a suspect, leaving Lucky Louie, Travis Martero, or Little Sam as the thief. Travis Martero could not be the thief because he was not in town on the night of the theft. Travis was in Los Angeles from September 25 – October 2. Little Sam is also not the thief because the police stated that the thief entered the museum through a second story window and Little Sam is afraid of heights. Another piece of evidence that eliminates Little Sam as the thief is the fact that a gold cigarette lighter was found at the crime scene. Little Sam does not smoke. Lucky Louie on the other hand is the thief. Firstly, he was in New York on the night of the theft. He is an expert climber, so entrance through the second story window should be no problem for him. He is also a smoker so that could definitely be his cigarette lighter forgotten at the crime scene. More importantly, it was found that a businessman offered Lucky Louie $5,500,000 if he could steal the Hope Diamond. The money was the motive for Lucky Louie to steal the diamond. All of this data and evidence points toward Lucky Louie as the thief. Conclusion 2: The thief is Lucky Louie. He came through the second story window because he is an expert climber. A cigarette lighter was left at the crime scene and Lucky Louie is a smoker. It was discovered that a businessman offered Lucky Louie $5,500,000 if he could steal the Hope Diamond. This is the reason why Lucky Louie decided to steal the diamond. Evidence for why it isn’t the other suspects Evidence for why it is Lucky Louie Doesn’t talk about the hypothesis Not enough evidence!!

Do Now…(Do not copy!) Right 1)Write your conclusion 2)Read your conclusion to yourself and see if it has ALL of the criteria of a GOOD conclusion 3)Rewrite your conclusion to add any missing criteria

Do Now…(Do not copy!) Right, Page 10 4) Switch notebooks with your neighbor 5) Read his/her conclusion 6) Below his/her conclusion: If you think that the conclusion is reasonable and correct, write an explanation as to why. OR If you think the conclusion is NOT reasonable or correct, write an explanation as to why.

Norms for Stating Your Opinion Use these starters: I agree with this conclusion because… I disagree with this conclusion because… Use ONLY EVIDENCE from our activity to support your opinion
