Lesson Nine: God Uses the Lord’s Supper to Get to Us

23 What is the Lord’s Supper? Read Matthew 26:26-28 Jesus set up the Lord’s Supper on Passover night, the night before His execution. It involves bread without yeast and fermented grape juice. Jesus tells us they are His body and blood. Lesson Nine: God Uses the Lord’s Supper to Get to Us

24 How can Jesus’ body and blood be part of the Lord’s Supper? Read Mark 14:22-24 You cannot taste Jesus’ body and blood in this sacrament. Still, Jesus tells us they are 100% there, without taking anything away from the bread and wine (Real Presence). Jesus never explains how four things can be where we only see and taste two. He only assures us it is true. It’s like when the Bible says that Jesus is 100% God and 100% human at the same time. It doesn’t have to make sense. If God says it, we believe it, and enjoy the benefits of it. Lesson Nine: God Uses the Lord’s Supper to Get to Us

25 How can Jesus’ body and blood be part of the Lord’s Supper? Read 1 Corinthians 10:16 This is where the word “communion” comes from. Paul says Jesus’ body and blood are sharing the same space as the bread and wine. He doesn’t explain how. Both sacraments have things we don’t understand, just like the 1+1+1=1 teaching about God. Lesson Nine: God Uses the Lord’s Supper to Get to Us

26 Why do we still value the Lord’s Supper today? A. Luke 22:19 The Lord’s Supper helps us remember that Jesus is a flesh-and-blood person who lived here in our place. It helps us remember the torture He suffered as He stood in for us. Lesson Nine: God Uses the Lord’s Supper to Get to Us

27 Why do we still value the Lord’s Supper today? Lesson Nine: God Uses the Lord’s Supper to Get to Us B. 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 The Lord’s Supper also tells what Jesus’ death means. The yeast-free bread is Jesus’ sin-free body – His donation. It’s our ticket to heaven. The wine is His blood, which reminds us He suffered damnation for us. We are forever safe from God’s rage.

28 What should the Lord’s Supper mean to me? Matthew 26:28 The Lord’s Supper is another way God personalizes what Jesus did for all the people in the world. It’s His way of telling us all our personal, lifelong sins are gone for good. Sacraments are God’s visible gospel message. Lesson Nine: God Uses the Lord’s Supper to Get to Us SIN

29 Where does the supernatural power in the Lord’s Supper come from? Matthew 26:28 It doesn’t come from the pastor saying words or making signs over the bread and wine before we eat it. It comes from Jesus’ promise that God has really taken responsibility for all our sins. Lesson Nine: God Uses the Lord’s Supper to Get to Us …for the forgiveness of sins.

God can reach all but the dead with His gospel in baptism.
