1 A “Crash Course” in American History A Review for You!

2 Bering Strait ~ (noun) The Bering Strait is a body of water approximately 53 miles wide between Russia and Alaska. During the Ice Age, the land bridge under the Bering Strait was exposed when the water froze allowing early man to cross it and enter the Americas.

3 Indigenous ~ (adjective) people who are native to the land, or the first to inhabit a land One of the impacts of globalization on the world is the loss of indigenous people as they assimilate into other cultures.

4 Subjugate~ (verb) to put somebody under your control Many Indigenous people were subjugated by their conquerors.

5 Colonization- (noun) At one point in history, the colonization of the Americas was completed by the Europeans. the process of one country taking control of another economically and culturally

6 Intrinsic ~(adjective) motivation that comes from inside an individual rather than from any outside pressure or rewards Some people are only intrinsically motivated if there is a reward, others do things just for the satisfaction. What about you????

7 Review of American History

8 Anywhere between 13,000 to 15,000 years ago, people first came to the Americas by Bering Strait which was frozen during the Ice Age or by boat, sailing from Europe in the North Atlantic.

9 As time goes on, the people form groups and these groups form civilizations and cultures and will be called Indians. Incas American Indians Mayans Aztecs

10 These early civilizations thrived, even after being discovered by the Viking Leif Ericsson from Norway in 1000 AD or CE in what is now Newfoundland in Canada.

11 But this will all come to an end in 1492, with the coming of Columbus who is looking for a shorter route to China from Europe and accidentally lands in the Americas.
