Sometimes it is easy to find them - look for a group of tourist cars – they’ve all stopped to look at some wonder of the wild! However you must return to the protected compound at night otherwise the lions might eat you! How many animals can you spot in a day? How many of the Big Five can you find (Lion, Elephant, Leopard, Rhino and Buffalo).. Safari

5  Copyright Valiant Technology Ltd Preparation Tasks Mark out a 10 by 10 space for the Safari Park Ask the students to find out what animals should be in the park – can they find out what animals make up the Big Five? Get photographs or paint pictures of the animals Get the students to place animals around the area: ask them to think about where animals might be, what groups they might be, etc. In RoamerWorld write a procedure for each animal you might see for example: On the screen Procedure 1 would would write the word Lion.

6  Copyright Valiant Technology Ltd Tasks Locate the compound in the bottom right corner Decide on a number of program instructions The above counts as two instructions Using no more than the number of instructions how many animals can the Safari visit? They must start at the compound and return to the compound When you get to an animal location include the the Procedure for the animal name in your program. This will not do anything with the floor robot but, it will write the name on screen map in the location you found it – the procedures do not count toward the instruction count As alternative you can use Roamer Cards to decide what instructions a student can use Instead of using RoamerWorld’s text command you could ask the student’s to use the software’s stamp feature – you would need to use paint to create images of the animals (or you can scan in pictures) You can vary the activity: how many carnivores or nocturnal animals can you find? What other groups can the students suggest? You can create a different environment and use that to study other animals – Ocean world, Insect World etc.
