LEADER DEVELOPMENT AND RURAL CHURCH REVITALIZATION BREAK-OUT SESSION RENOVATE! 2014 ©2014 DR. JOHN R. KIMBALL

THE NEED FOR A “SETTLED” PASTOR Unhealthy Expectations from Non-Settled Pastors “Cutting His Teeth” “Stepping Stone” “Willow Creek” or “Saddleback”

THE NEED FOR A “SETTLED” PASTOR Changing the Pattern: Called to the Small Church Love the People Enough to Stay until Retirement Love the Community Enough to Embed There Patience to Wait on their Realization You’re Not Leaving

THE NEED FOR BIBLICAL LEADERSHIP CRITERIA Do Not Fault the Church for Unhealthy Leadership Choices: Probably had to figure it out on their own Succumbed to Powerful Personalities (filled the vacuum) Looked to “Experts” Outside the Church for Understanding

THE NEED FOR BIBLICAL LEADERSHIP CRITERIA Develop a Clear Biblical Theology of Leadership: Do This WITH the Church Family Over Time Work Within the Existing Framework as Much as Possible Until You Can Implement Change (don’t be a bull in a china shop!) Matthew 9:35-38 Ephesians 4:11-16 1 Timothy 3 Titus 2 2 Timothy 2:2

THE NEED FOR BIBLICAL LEADERSHIP CRITERIA TWO ROLES: Overseer Servant Both are focused on the HARVEST “If you’re not going to engage the harvest, there is no need to develop leaders.” – Tom Johnston (Praxis Center)

THE PURPOSE OF CHURCH LEADERSHIP Inward Leadership with an Outward Focus! Protect the Flock Nurture the Flock (Discipling and Being Discipled) Serve Everyone Labor for the Harvest

DEVELOPING LEADERS TO THAT PURPOSE Leadership Development IS Discipleship! Teach the to love God with every fiber of their being (Matthew 22:37-38) Teach them to love people with ture humility (Matthew 22:39-40) Teach them how to make disciples themselves for Jesus (Matthew 28:18-20) Leadership Development Requires an Ever-Deepening Walk with Christ (people “self-select out” when they refuse to do this!) Leadership Development is Based in Relationship (think Barnabas & Paul or Paul & Timothy) Leadership Development Takes Time

ADDRESSING RESISTANCE Better have started with prayer and intercession (see notes from Developing a Biblical Vision) Take them back to the Bible 1.Jesus taught the multitudes (Academic) 2.Jesus trained the 70 (tactical) 3.Jesus lived with the 12 (daily, life-on-life example) 4.Jesus poured himself into Peter, James and John (Life investment in a FEW) 5.John 13:15-17; 20:21; Matthew 28:19-20 Lead by Consistent Example Ensure your Leaders have disciples Work with the Four Personalities

RESULTS Leaders focused on the Harvest Leaders living out their purpose Leaders prepared for Kingdom service Discipleship modeled by the leadership

REVITALIZATION CANNOT HAPPEN WITHOUT LEADER DEVELOPMENT! IF YOU LEARN ONLY ONE THING…
