4. Protecting Social Welfare Wanted to relieve urban problems and the effects of industrialization. YMCA provided education and sports programs. Salvation Army opened soup kitchens and nurseries. Illinois Factory Act i n 1893 prohibited child labor and reduced women’s hours.

5. Promoting Moral Reform Focused on morality in order to improve people’s lives. Temperance Movement g ained support for prohibition of alcohol. Also worked towards getting women the right to vote.

6. Creating Economic Reform Large corporations were getting larger and more corrupt. –R–Robber Barons = rich guys who made their money by taking advantage of others. Carnegie, Rockefeller, J.P. Morgan Muckrakers were journalists that exposed the corruption and abuse that took place in corporations. Many people began to question the capitalist system. Competition was natural enough at one time, but do you think you are competing today? Many of you think you are competing. Against whom? Against Rockefeller? About as I would if I had a wheelbarrow and competed with the Santa Fe Railroad from here to Kansas City. -Eugene V. Debs

7. Trustbusting Roosevelt disliked trusts. –Trust = consolidation of small companies to make one big corporation His mission was to “bust” the trusts, which meant to break up the large corporations to make competition more fair. He busted 44 trusts during his presidency.
