Help put more power in the hands of the average PERSON, NOT the wealthy business man Help those people working in the factories, not those who owned the factories Follow the 4 GOALS Social welfare, moral improvement, economic reform (competition and muckraking) and fostering efficiency

4 Questions 1 - 3 1.) What did Taft “bust up” better than Roosevelt?
-trusts 2.) What is a tax on imports? -tariff 3.) What is an effect of lowering tariffs? -increases competition by allowing more foreign goods into the country – potentially would be cheaper than the U.S. good (helps out people in the U.S. afford products)

5 Questions 4 - 6 4.) What is the purpose of antitrust legislation?
-to break up trusts (monopolies) to create more competition – competition is good for consumers b/c prices will drop 5.) What is the “watchdog” agency that investigates companies to be sure they do not form trusts? -Federal Trade Commission 6.) What is the 19th Amendment? Why is it a “progressive” amendment? -women’s suffrage – allowing women to vote was a moral issue (all created equal), social welfare (women could vote on issues facing America)

-Protecting Social Welfare, Promoting Moral Improvement, Creating Economic Reform, Fostering Efficiency (will need to describe these) 11.) How did Progressives try to “improve moral standards”? -Banning alcohol (18th Amendment) and banning child labor -women’s suffrage

What was the Seneca Falls Convention? -the first women’s rights convention in 1848 14.) Who was a leader at Seneca Falls? -Susan B. Anthony

9 Questions 15.) How did city or local governments improve efficiency? -Commission System - hired experts (qualified people who knew how to run a city) 16.) What is the 17th Amendment? -Direct Election of Senators (ppl choose, not state legislatures) 17.) Why is the 16th Amendment called a PROGRESSIVE income tax? -The more you make, the higher percentage you pay

Banned the sale and drinking of alcohol 19.) Which industry went on strike and Teddy Roosevelt answered? -coal mines 20.) How did Progressives try to improve “social welfare”? -community centers, opened libraries, recreation facilities, classes, social services
