1 British Computer Society NORTH LONDON BRANCH www.bcs.org/branches/nlondon 2002 Events at the heart of London - in touch with key IT topics - IT’s Project Management Wednesday 18 th September 2002, 18.30 This event is in association with Learning Tree International & others

2 British Computer Society NORTH LONDON BRANCH www.bcs.org/branches/nlondon 10 ‘Laws’ of project management 1.Advantage of not planning is that you don’t know you’re going to fail till the very end. 2.Fuzzy project objectives let you tell yourself you’re succeeding, even if you can’t convince anyone else. 3.Carelessly planned project takes 3 times longer to complete than expected. Carefully planned project takes only twice as long. 4.Do you know any major project that completed on time, within budget, with original objectives and with same staff that started it? Yours will not be the first. 5.Projects progress quickly till 90% complete – then remain 90% complete.

3 British Computer Society NORTH LONDON BRANCH www.bcs.org/branches/nlondon 10 ‘Laws’ of project management 6.When things are going well, something will go wrong (Sod’s Law). When things can’t get any worse, they do. 7.What can go wrong will go wrong. What can’t go wrong probably already has, without you knowing (Murphy’s Law). Remember O’Reilly’s corollary – “Murphy was an optimist”. 8.If project content is allowed to change freely, then rate of change will exceed rate of progress. 9.Project teams detest progress reporting because they’d rather let small problems go away by themselves. 10.Small problems never go away by themselves. They become larger problems.
